After attending a Beagle trial near Marmora, Ontario, I came away disappointed because I did not have any good ideas to paint from after the experience. After sitting down and reviewing the photos I had taken that day - the red plaid jacket just begged to be painted! I managed to work some Beagles into it and then the hare pulled the story together. It's my 'laughing' hare - laughing to himself while teasing the dogs - 'all this running around and around is just going to give you gray hares (hairs)! It was not until after I finished the painting that I was informed it was common practice to leave a jacket behind after the hunt so the stay dogs would return to it and be picked up the following morning.
