Appropriate setting and realistic positioning are critical elements
in Mia's painting but proved especially challenging in 'The
Gathering'. Mia placed the Border Collies in the foreground
emphasizing a 'sense of urgency' in their expressions, and arranged
the Scottish Blackface sheep behind them. The gray sky, a sure
promise of an approaching storm, prompt Maggie and Mirk to quickly
herd the flock to safety. Just for a moment, it appears the big
ram might be too much for Maggie, but Merk quickly assists her
in this formidable task.
Both dogs, British imports that were sheep
dogs trialing champions, have been a major influence in
the development of Border Collies in Canada today. Mia, who bred,
trialed and trained Border Collies for twelve years, loves to
watch them work. She now only has one Border - Caleb - but the
sheep are now only in their dreams!
